I saw them first among the stones.

They walked, he tried to keep her eyes on his
with amber talk and smiles.

She tried to hold her eyes on his
to keep the talk alive,
both tried.

But once it seemed to him (and me)
that for these efforts she would trip
upon an unseen stone—he reached to catch her,
and she caught herself
on sturdy legs.

He let his unseen hand fall short.
And I knew they would not be lovers.
