Harry Crews on the backyard deck of his home in Gainesville, Florida.
This bibliography is part of an on-going attempt to document all works written by and about Harry Crews, the novelist, essayist, and educator who has written and taught for well over 30 years. A previous bibliography by Michael Hargraves [Harry Crews: A Bibliography. Westport, CT: Greenwood, 1986] recorded the bulk of his early work, but as Crews continues to write and publish, readers and academics have hurried to keep up with the pace. As well, a resurgence of interest in Crews and his work in the late 1980s increased the number of commentaries, both popular and critical. Add to this, a cult-like following attuned to the media's portrayal of Crews as a pugilist-outlaw in the 1990s. Keeping up with Crews requires the stamina and discipline of the boxers, body-builders, and martial artists who inhabit his works.
A different version of this bibliography appeared in an issue of The Southern Quarterly devoted to Crews ["A Harry Crews Bibliography: Short Work and Critical Response." Southern Quarterly 37.1 (Fall 1998): 118-123].
